Hans Wegner
The CH-28 chair by Hans Wegner was designed in 1951 for Carl Hansen & Son and produced at their factory in Odense, Denmark. It was part of the 2nd collection of Wegner's designs made by Carl Hansen as part of a long and successful collaboration. The Sawbuck dining chairs followed a year later in 1952. The majority of Wegner's output up to that point had been handmade by cabinetmaker Johannes Hansen in Copenhagen for the annual Snedkerlaugets Exhibitions. Wegner's first major foray into industrial production began with Carl Hansen in 1949 with 3 chairs including the iconic Wishbone chair.
The CH-28 was later nicknamed Sawbuck due to its X-shaped profile reminiscent of a trestle work table. It features striking paddle-shaped arms and a wide, moulded plywood back with oak veneer. This example has a beautiful, patinated oak frame that has darkened over time. The seat has been reupholstered in new aniline leather.
