Kai Kristiansen
The Model 121 lounge chair is widely considered one of Kai Kristiansen's finest works from a long and celebrated career. The chair, later nicknamed Paper Knife, was designed in 1955 for Danish producers Magnus Olesen in Durup, North Jutland. It was a commercial success through the 1950s and 1960s and formed part of a collection together with sofas and an ottoman.
Kai Kristiansen studied under Professor Kaare Klint at the Royal Danish Academy in Copenhagen. After he graduated he opened his own design studio and formed working relationships with several key Danish factories. The Paper Knife was one of his first designs put into production and features his signature elegant, refined forms that would come to define a career spanning more than 5 decades.
This example has a lustrous rosewood frame that has been carefully restored and refinished. The new foam cushions are upholstered in cumin-yellow wool fabric by Rose Uniacke. Other upholstery options are available by request.
